Over the weekend, the much-anticipated Gables Hockey Complex in the Hills Shire District officially opened its doors with a Grand Opening Gala Day. The event featured a variety of exciting hockey sessions, including “come and try” opportunities, junior training, and exhibition matches, attracting participants of all ages and skill levels.
This state-of-the-art facility promises to be a major boost for the local community and the sport of hockey both regionally and nationally. With its FIH Category 2 and 3 certification, the complex is now officially equipped to host international-level matches, providing a global stage for hockey in Western Sydney. Not only will this encourage greater grassroots participation, but it will also inspire fans to watch and potentially take up the sport themselves.
In addition to the world-class hockey facilities, the Central Playing Fields offers a wide range of amenities to cater to all sporting interests. The facility includes multipurpose fields for soccer and rugby, full-sized basketball courts for basketball, netball, tennis, and futsal, as well as a skate park, rock climbing structure, and a children’s playground. A fenced dog park, amenities building with a canteen, and changing rooms make the complex a hub for family-friendly activities and community engagement.
Earlier this year, Kookaburra coach Mark Hager and Hockeyroo captain Kaitlin Nobbs visited the site and were impressed by what they saw. Both emphasised the critical role the complex will play in supporting the development of hockey in the region.
“These Olympic-standard hockey pitches open up the possibility of hosting national and state championships right here, giving young players something to aspire to and helping grow the sport,” said Hager. “This precinct is a game-changer for the area – the future of hockey here is in very good hands.”
Nobbs echoed this, highlighting the importance of world-class facilities for developing athletes: “For athletes to succeed, access to top-tier training environments is essential. This facility will provide them with the tools they need to reach their full potential.”
Dr. Michelle Byrne, Mayor of The Hills Shire, called the opening a historic occasion. “Today marks the opening of the first competition-standard hockey facility in The Hills. This incredible space will support young hockey players as they train, play, and grow – perhaps even inspiring future Hockeyroos and Kookaburras,” Dr. Byrne said. “Providing premier sports facilities aligns with our Council’s strategy to offer pathways for residents to access elite sporting opportunities.”
Hockey NSW CEO Matt Bulkeley also shared his excitement about the new facility: “We’re thrilled that Stockland and the Hills Shire have developed an international-standard hockey venue in Western Sydney. There has been a shortage of hockey fields in this part of the city, so this new complex, with its two synthetic turf pitches and comprehensive infrastructure, is a fantastic development for the region. It will play a key role in our mission to grow and develop hockey here.”
The Gables Hockey Complex is located at the Central Playing Fields within the vibrant Gables community, which is already home to 5,000 residents. This growing community enjoys easy access to parks, schools, and other local amenities, including a town centre currently under construction.
With its premium facilities and commitment to supporting athletes of all ages and abilities, The Gables Hockey Complex is set to become a cornerstone of the Hills District’s sporting culture for years to come.
Central Playing Fields is located at 99 Fontana Drive, Gables.
