NSW Masters Teams Triumph at National Championships with Multiple Medals

The NSW Masters hockey teams have once again demonstrated their exceptional talent and determination at the recent Women's and Men's Masters National Championships. Both tournaments were filled with intense competition, outstanding performances, and a multitude of medals for NSW.

Women's Masters National Championship

The Women's Masters Championship was held at Sydney Olympic Park and Briars Hockey Club, where NSW showcased their prowess across multiple age divisions. The results were nothing short of spectacular:

Gold Medals:

    • Over 50s: NSW defeated WA 2-1, with goals from Denise Gersbach and Kim Dunkin.

    • Over 65s: A thrilling 1-1 draw with VIC (goal by Jill Williams) was decided in a penalty shootout, which NSW won 2-1.
    • Over 70s: Betsy Bewsher's goal secured a 1-0 victory against VIC.

 

Silver Medals:

    • Over 45s: NSW narrowly lost to VIC 1-2, with a goal from Katrina Brown.
    • Over 55s: A 2-2 draw with WA (Shannon Kavanagh scored both goals) ended in a 0-3 defeat in the penalty shootout.

 

Bronze Medals:

    • Over 34s: NSW defeated WA 2-1, with goals from Alison Milner and Ali Stanford.
    • Over 40s: Emma Lucas scored the decisive goal in a 1-0 win over WA.
    • Over 60s: Michelle Breytenbach's goal led NSW to a 1-0 victory over SA.

In recognition of their overall excellence, NSW was awarded the Meg Wilson Trophy, solidifying their status as the champion state. The Women's Masters teams can be proud of their outstanding achievements and the spirit they brought to the competition.

Men's Masters National Championships

The Men's Masters Championship, held in Tasmania, saw NSW continue their winning streak in a fiercely contested tournament that was split into two parts.

Tournament 2 Results:

  • Gold Medal:

    • 50/2s: NSW emerged victorious against VICB after a 2-2 draw, winning 3-2 in the shootout.
  • Bronze Medals:

    • 34s: NSW White defeated NSW Blue 3-0 in an all-NSW clash.
    • 40s: Despite a 2-2 draw with QLD Maroon, NSW finished with a 1-3 loss in the shootout.
    • 50/1s: NSW claimed a 3-0 victory over VIC.

Special congratulations go to Craig Turner, who was named Player of the Final in his match, showcasing his exceptional skills and contribution to the team's success.

Tournament 3 Results:

On the penultimate day of the competition in Hobart, the NSW teams continued to fight hard:

  • Silver Medal:

    • 55s (2): Despite a valiant effort, NSW lost 3-2 to Hockey Tasmania.
  • Bronze Medals:

    • 60s (2): NSW secured a 2-0 win against Queensland Men's Masters Hockey.

In the semi-finals, NSW's teams faced tough challenges, with the 55s (1) losing to Hockey Victoria 4-0, the 65s drawing 0-0 with QLD Maroon (losing the shootout 1-0), and the 75s falling 3-0 to South Australian Men's Masters Hockey Association Incorporated.

These results reflect the depth of talent and dedication within NSW's Masters teams. Both the Women's and Men's Championships were a resounding success, highlighting the strength of NSW hockey at the national level.
