The 2024 Country Championships held in Goulburn, NSW, from August 3rd to 10th, showcased the finest talent from non-metropolitan hockey associations across the country. The eight-day tournament featured twelve competitive men’s and women’s teams; including representatives from Queensland, South Australia, Victoria, Western Australia, the Australian Defence Force Academy, and of course, New South Wales.
NSW, fielding both men’s and women’s teams, emerged as the undeniable stars of the tournament, securing double gold with dominant performances that saw both teams run through the competition undefeated.
In the men’s gold medal match, NSW clinched victory with a narrow 1-0 win over the Australian Defence Force. Zane Drennan’s early third-minute goal set the tone for a defensive battle. Zane was awarded both the Player of the Tournament and the Top Goal Scorer – a testament to his exceptional performance throughout the championship.
On the women’s side, NSW dominated origin rivals, Queensland with a decisive 3-0 triumph in the gold medal match. Eloisa Purtell’s double in the first quarter and Flo Davidson’s field goal in the second, established an early lead that Queensland struggled to breach despite a strong effort in the later stages of the game.
Mel Searl was awarded the Top Goal Scorer of the women’s competition with Emily Thompson being recognised as the Player of the Tournament.
Hockey NSW extends its thanks to all the volunteers, coaches, managers and players who contributed to the success of the 2024 Country Championships campaign. Their dedication behind the scenes ensured a smooth and memorable event for everyone involved.
