Hockey NSW Adopts New FIH Regulation Changes for Athlete Safety

Published Wed 19 Feb 2025

a significant move to enhance player safety, Hockey NSW has announced that, effective immediately in 2025, all defending players will be required to wear a face mask during penalty corners, aligning with the latest regulation changes introduced by the International Hockey Federation (FIH).

This regulation change follows the FIH's decision to make face masks mandatory for all defending players at penalty corners in all FIH competitions, in response to the increasing speed and power of the game. Hockey Australia has confirmed that the new rule will be applied across all its National Championships, including U14, U16, U18, U21, Men’s & Women’s Masters, Country Championships, and Indoor Championships, as well as in all Hockey One League events.

The new rule reflects Hockey NSW’s ongoing commitment to athlete welfare, ensuring that players are better protected from potential injury during penalty corners.

In addition to the face mask requirement, another key regulation change involves the interpretation of the 5-metre rule. Players must now refrain from approaching within 5 metres of an opponent receiving a falling raised ball until it has been touched by the receiver. While the ball may be intercepted within the 5-metre zone, it can only be done safely and outside of playing distance.

At the local level, Hockey NSW is working closely with Associations to implement the new regulations in local fixtures. For further information on how these regulations will be applied locally, players, coaches, and officials are urged to contact their respective Associations.

Hockey NSW remains committed to fostering a safe and competitive environment for hockey players across the state, ensuring the sport continues to grow while prioritising the health and safety of all participants.
